How to manually install PerformancePoint Dashboard Designer

Posted by Russell on January - 7 - 2011 with 2 Comments

In 2010, the install point of PerformancePoint Dashboard Designer isn’t overly discoverable, but Microsoft has done a good job documenting how to get the thing loaded.

Most of the time, our instructions tell you to go to a BI Center site, and install it from there. You can also install it by choosing to add new content in a PerformancePoint Content List.

However, there are times when you don’t have a BI Center site installed, or are otherwise dealing with a site which is “locked down” (or just broken!). For example, I’m working with a site right now where the master page has been so hacked up, I get errors when I attempt to navigate to the PerformancePoint Content List in an attempt to install dashboard designer. This site is highly customized so there is no BI Center landing page for me to install from, either.

So what’s a guy to do? What is an easy way to get Dashboard Designer installed without jumping through lots of hoops?

You can point to the redirect page.  This is the same page that is launched when you choose to create new PPS content from inside a PPS Content List.

The string appears to be case-sensitive, so type it carefully:

http://machinename/_layouts/PPSWebParts/DesignerRedirect.aspx

I always forget this blasted string and it takes me a while to find it again…so this post is more for me than you, dear reader!

One other, semi-related thing. If you attempt to load the PerformancePoint Dashboard Designer from inside your portal and nothing happens, you probably have a security issue going on  in IE. Add your site to the list of Trusted Sites in the browser, and you’ll be good.

Hi Rusell, thanks for the post, it helped with a similar issue I was having. I had a different URL, being ‘https://machinename/_layouts/ppsma/1033/designer.application‘ which I found in an error log, and was then able to insert into the IE address bar after I’d logged into the site. Cheers, Mike
